Why cows can eat only grass and still be muscular (and sometimes fat)
1. Cows don’t “eat grass” the way humans eat plants
Cows are ruminants. They have a four-chambered stomach with a fermentation system.
Inside the rumen:
Grass (cellulose) is fermented by bacteria
Those bacteria turn fiber into volatile fatty acids (VFAs)
→ acetate, propionate, butyrateVFAs are pure energy, especially for fat storage and muscle work
The cow doesn’t live on grass.
It lives on the by-products of fermentation.
2. The bacteria become the protein
Here’s the wild part:
The microbes multiply
They die
The cow digests them
So cows get high-quality complete protein
→ from bacteria, not from grass itself
That protein builds:
Muscle
Organs
Enzymes
Hormones
3. Insulin still exists in cows
Carbohydrates → fermentation → VFAs → insulin signaling
Insulin:
Drives nutrients into muscle
Stores excess energy as fat
Prevents muscle breakdown
That’s why:
Grass-fed cows can still be fat
Feedlot cows get extremely fat (more energy in, same system)
Now lions -same result, different route
Lions eat meat only. No carbs.
So how do they get muscle and fat?
1. Protein → glucose (gluconeogenesis)
Lions convert:
Amino acids
Glycerol from fat
into glucose in the liver
No bread needed.
2. Fat is a direct fuel
Animal fat:
Powers the body
Spares protein from being burned
Supports hormones (testosterone, cortisol balance)
That’s why lions are:
Lean
Dense
Explosively powerful
They’re never insulin-spiking all day like humans do.
The shared principle (this is the key)
Muscle and fat come from:
Energy availability
Hormonal environment
Low chronic stress
Efficient digestion
Species-appropriate food
Not from eating “protein shakes” or “bulking foods.”
Why humans get confused
Humans:
Eat constantly
Spike insulin all day
Stress hormones stay high
Don’t allow fasting or repair
Eat food their biology didn’t evolve for
Result:
Fat gain without strength
Muscle loss despite protein
Metabolic disease
The uncomfortable truth
If:
A cow can build muscle on grass
A lion can build muscle on meat
Then humans getting sick from food is not about lack of protein.
It’s about:
Constant eating
Hormonal chaos
Ultra-processed foods
No metabolic rest
That’s it.
