Ron &Hospitals Chronicle

Years ago, out of curiosity, I started listing and writing down all the hospitals I have ever worked at since starting my career in healthcare. It has been surreal and a blessing. I do well being in motion and not tied down to one hospital.

One lesson remains true for all the places I have been, people are the same everywhere you go. The difference is that some hospitals have better cultures. The staff are kinder, more supportive, and show greater appreciation for one another.

Below are the hospitals since 2014

LICH was the worst hospital I have ever worked at. As you can see, it has a one star or let's just say, it is a star rated hospital. Not long after I left, I learned that two of the clinicians I had started there with had also left their positions, I felt vindicate and of course, I wasn’t surprised. It was a very depressing place to work.

The only good thing about that hospital was its location, for it was very close to the house I was living in at the time, and I could easily go home for a quick lunch break. I did enjoy the community around it; that was the one good thing I missed about living in the town of Patchogue.

I still go to Phelps. I was just there on Friday and Saturday, working on 2C, their overflow unit. I first started working there after I left WPH. They love me there very much, and that’s why I still enjoy going back. It feels like home. They always leave me to do my work in peace, in fact, they’ve spoiled me.

I started working at White Plains Hospital in 2014, and it is hard to believe that was eleven years ago. I learned a lot in that hospital, and in many ways, it shaped my entire outlook on healthcare. I began there as an apprentice, part of a program the hospital used as a backdoor to attract future clinicians. It was highly competitive when I applied from college, and I was fortunate to be selected.

After completing the apprenticeship, I returned as a technician while finishing my degree. That’s how I began working the night shift there. It is a very good hospital, with good quality of care but there are not a very easy place to work. I had a colleague told me she gets PTSD while working there. I was not surprised. When I finally became fully licensed to practice, I applied for a permanent night staff position, the only one available at the time , on Unit 5E. Keri was the manager then. We didn’t always see eye to eye on so many things, but shortly after I started, I joined the Medical-Surgical Council after passing my certification exam. That was the last big test I’ve taken to this day.

While on the council, I was eventually made a chair of that council, and by then, I had become quite well known throughout the hospital. But that chapter wouldn’t last long. In December 2019, I left my night position at the Plains and started working day shifts at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut after moving to Norwalk. It was an interesting transition, one that marked the beginning of a new phase in my career.
